New publication on women*-only compartments as a safety measure in public transport

In a recent article, Ines Kawgan-Kagan examines the debate surrounding women*-only compartments in local public transport in Germany against the backdrop of international experience and current security discourses. Drawing on academic literature, international empirical studies, and expert interviews, the article analyzes the extent to which women*-only compartments contribute to improving subjective and objective safety and what unintended side effects they may entail. From both a practical and operational perspective, the article discusses the opportunities and limitations of this measure, as well as its broader socio-symbolic implications and their significance in the context of equitable and safe public transport for all.
